Jack Cullen was given to Paul as an ill-thought out gift in 1974 by his aunt Susan. Though their friendship initially blossomed, as Paul grew up he began to distance himself from the awkward and embarassing toy. As fame beckoned, Paul spent increasingly less time with his former playmate, and kept him going with promises he could never keep; taking him to celebrity parties, introducing him to his hero John Thaw. Painfully naïve, Jack always takes Paul at his word, and lives his tragic existence in total faith that Paul will make good his promises.
